Happy New Year! Today, I went to Dayton to attend a Lunch & Learn at Sparkbox. When I got invited to this Lunch & Learn, I was excited because I thought it would be a unique opportunity to hear the perspectives of people in tech in another city. Dayton is unique in that it is far away enough from Cincinnati that the tech communities are separate, but close enough that it is feasible to attend an event there without needing to stay overnight. One question that I asked was about terminology. Terms like "front-end," "back-end," and "full-stack" are used in different ways by different people. I asked for some clarity on these terms and how this all fits together from a broader perspective. For example, how often would a product's web app and its mobile apps share the same "back-end?" Infinite Scrolling: To Use or Not to Use?

I have found myself frustrated many times in the past by a page with infinite scrolling because I cannot get to the footer. I have also found myself in the opposite situation; frustrated by a page that will not scroll further when I know there is more content. To use infinite scrolling or not to use infinite scrolling? That is the question. The answer, as with many things, is it depends on the situation. Recently, I came across a great article on PowerToFly's blog that offers some suggestions on how to decide whether or not to use infinite scrolling for a website or application. Edit-undo in VI

So, most of you are probably familiar with edit-undo functionality in word processors which is great when you delete something. Control-Z is also often a shortcut for this functionality. Well, for those of you who have never heard of VI, it is a text editor in Linux (an operating system) which can be used to write a program. For some reason, I had it in my head that there was no way to undo a bad command (like a delete). Suddenly, it occurred to me there must be and I Googled it and found out that the undo command is "u". Even easier than Control-Z! Silly me!
